The Second Chance Act of 2007 was signed into law on April 9, 2008 to reauthorize and revise the grant program within the Department of Justice for reentry of offenders into the community and to improve reentry planning and implementation. AFLS’s reentry program involves promoting the effective reintegration of offenders back to communities upon release from prison and jail. Reentry programming usually involves comprehensive case management and is intended to assist offenders in acquiring the life skills needed to succeed in the community and become law-abiding citizens. AFLS utilizes a variety of programs to assist offenders in the reentry process, including pre-release programs, linkage to drug rehabilitation and vocational training, and work programs.
